Typically when Abriendo Mentes holds “adult parties” it entails a group of volunteers getting together for dinner before a night out. Last week we shook things up and hosted an American-style potluck in honor of the 28 adult students who matriculated at the start of Session 2.
We transformed the salon into a banquet hall, complete with ironed white tablecloths and balloons, and welcomed members of our Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced classes as they joined AM teachers and volunteers for a last hurrah to celebrate the incredible progress they’ve made in the past several months.
Each student and teacher brought a dish to share (and let me just say I speak for all of the volunteers when I say that we should always invite Ticos to our potlucks). The food was delicious and we had a great time getting together as a large, Spanglish-speaking group.
It was a wonderful opportunity for one of our long-term volunteers and pivotal member of the AM Adult Education Program, Birgitte Maarup, to say goodbye to her students after two incredible sessions, and a great chance to introduce Lindsay to all of the awesome adult students who are working so hard to learn English. Altogether it was a very fun and inspiring event; and although it was the first “end of session” adult party, it certainly won’t be the last!
